I'm confused...

December 11th, 2011 (10:46 am)

current mood: confused

Okay... I know I'm just a simple Pagan and maybe this why I don't understand what's going on with the GOP and their supporters these days with their constant yammering about how this is a "Christian nation," their incessant prattling about what "good Christians" *they* are as opposed to everyone else, and their maniacal campaign to abolish all government programs designed to provide aid and comfort to the poor. Their own book, which they love to quote when it comes to denying equal rights and privileges to gays and non-Christians, says in Deuteronomy 15:7, 11

"If there is a poor man among your brothers in any of the towns of the land that the LORD your God is giving you, do not be  hardhearted or tightfisted toward your poor brother. There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land."

And in Proverbs 28:27
He who gives to the poor will lack nothing, but he who closes his eyes to them receives many curses.

And finally in 1 Timothy 6:17-19

Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life

So here is where I'm confused: If all the above is the true "word of God" and these people are the TRUE followers of Christ, and this is indeed a "Christian nation" like they claim... shouldn't these people be pushing for MORE programs designed to help the poor and needy, not less?

They love to say that it's this country's growing tolerance for "perverts and heathens" (in other words gays and non-Christian faiths) that has caused God to turn his face from America. But they don't seem to see what, to me, are some pretty straight forward admonishments against turning your back on those in need and the consequences you can expect if you do: " I give you wealth so you can help the less fortunate among you. Refuse to do so and I will take that wealth away from you and give it to someone who will."

All that conservative Republicans and the Tea Party seem to be interested in is trying to find clever ways to convince themselves that while that may be what God and Jesus supposedly said, that NOT what they meant. But after watching the recent Republican presidential debates on top of all they've been screaming about since Obama took office in 2009, they have not so subtly accused Obama of being an evil secret Muslim bent on "destroying this country" and as proof they point to his "socialist agenda" of providing affordable health care to those who are sick, food and shelter to those who are hungry and cold, and trying to ensure our elders can live their twilight years in peace and comfort. My gods, what a BASTARD Obama is!!!!

I do not understand how any person of moral decency can continue to vote for these people...

With the way they act, you'd think that they were indeed their own church. The Church of Jingostic Nationalism, Xenophobia and Anti-intellecutalism, but still someone waving the banner of Jesus, you know.
